“Children have never been very good at listening to adults but they have never failed to imitate them.”

James Baldwin

Modifications

A Modification is defined as a change in the school curriculum, standard, test preparation, location, timing, scheduling, expectations, student response and/or other attributes which provide access for a student with a disability to participate in a course, standard or test, which does fundamentally alter or lower the standards or expectations of the course, standard or test.  In other words, children who receive Modifications are not expected to learn the same material as their classmates.

Some examples of Modifications are:

  • Specialized curriculum is provided for a child with a lower level of comprehension

  • Materials are adapted

  • Vocabulary is simplified

  • Grading is subject to different standards based on IEP goals than general education

  • Assignments or tests are changed using lower reading levels

Many people use the terms Accommodations and Modifications interchangeably.  It's important to understand that there is a clear distinction between Accommodations and Modifications and Ohio Special Education Advocacy can help identify appropriate modifications to support your child.
